Could we build this ourselves with no-code automation platforms?

For simple, single-step flows, yes, and it is often the right call. The limit appears at three points: error handling when a step fails, cases the rules did not anticipate, and maintenance when a connected system changes. Self-built flows usually work for months and then break quietly, which is the expensive part.

Where self-building genuinely wins

Moving a form submission into a spreadsheet, sending a notification when a deal changes stage, copying a file between folders. These are single-step, low-consequence and easy to check by eye. If something goes wrong you notice within a day and fix it in ten minutes.

Where the ceiling is

The ceiling is not the tool, it is everything around the happy path. What happens to the twelve orders that failed while the connection was down? How does the flow behave when the same customer submits twice? Who is told when a step silently stopped? Building the happy path is a fifth of the work; the rest is what keeps it running.

The second ceiling is unstructured input. Rules work on fields; they do not work on a rambling email, a photographed delivery note or a phone call. That is where a model is needed, and where the design question becomes what happens when the model is unsure.

A reasonable division of labour

Keep the simple internal flows in-house; your team will maintain them faster than anyone external. Bring in help for the processes that touch customers, money or several systems at once, and for anything where a silent failure would not be noticed for a week.
